When it come’s to a newborn session, more often than not your session will take place in a studio. However, I don’t actually have a studio. Thankfully I have local resources that allow me alternative options. This particular session is a special one as well as a throw back from early last year. I wanted to share about my special connection with this couple as well as how I work without a studio.
Growing With This Couple Through The Years
I have had the privilege of knowing Mike and Ashley since they were in high school. Ashley has been my nieces best friend for many years so of course I got to know her as well. These two are high school sweethearts so it’s been a joy watching them grow and begin their lives. Professionally, not only did I do Ashley’s senior photos but I also photographed their wedding in 2014. To have the opportunity to photograph their newborn session felt like everything came full circle!
Studio Newborn Session’s When You Don’t Have A Studio
It’s no secret that I don’t actually have my own studio and that is purely by choice. With that, I feel lucky to be in a community that has resources to allow me to do what I need to do. In Ponca City we have City Central. It’s a building that was repurposed in recent years that offers long term and short term office space. The space I use is a small office with one wall that is a north facing window and it can be rented for a day or months. It’s perfect for what I need and I just haul my stuff in and out as need be! I also offer in home newborn sessions. I’ll cover these in more detail in a future blog post.

What Made This Newborn Session So Special
There is something to be said when you watch people you love become parents for the first time. Whether it be a friend, a sibling or another family member. Watching them make that transition is truly a sight to see. I remember during this session just sitting and watching Ashley soothe her sweet boy back to a slumber and I was just in awe. Watching Mike and Ashley work together as a team and and communicate on a whole new level was eye opening. It really made me realize how fast time has gone by! I am so proud of how far they have come as a couple and now as parents!
Styling A Studio Newborn Session
I provide everything needed for baby during a studio newborn session. If Mom, Dad and/or siblings are participating, I like to suggest certain colors depending on what our background will be. For baby, I have a newborn questionnaire that I send out prior to the session with a variety of questions that will help me to prepare for the session. I have all the wraps and props and I incorporate your preferences in as much as possible. This includes any special items or outfits you may choose to bring.
The Importance Of Participating In Your Newborn Session
You just had a baby. You are sore, you are tired and you probably don’t feel like dolling up for photos. I’ve been there and I get it. However, I strongly urge you to reconsider. Simply put, babies don’t keep. They change so fast and there is a strong possibility if you decide to skip pictures with your new little bundle, you will likely regret it later on. Even if you don’t feel like yourself, try your best to put the insecurities aside, put on a nice top and take photos with your sweet baby. I promise, you won’t regret it!
