Winters in Oklahoma are definitely not the most ideal time for family photos. So when your family is only able to get together for the holidays, your options for a pretty location are very slim. Thankfully if a winter family session is your only option, beautiful places like Lydie’s Cottage save the day!
Forming a Connection To Make a Repeat Client
I first worked with Carol in December of 2021. She hired me to take photos of her granddaughters as a surprise gift for her daughter-in-law. My connection to Carol actually goes beyond our first session together. She worked with my mother-in-law for many years and her family attends church with my sister-in-law’s family! So this wasn’t our first time meeting. I love finding the little connections like this so I was truly honored when she wanted to schedule a session. Needless to say when she reached out about a family session this past winter, I was 100% on board!
Family Fun at Lydie’s Cottage
If you are not familiar, Lydie’s Cottage is a part of the grounds on the Marland Mansion in Ponca City. It’s a public historical landmark and a popular spot for everything from photos to events. When other locations are no longer “pretty” and out of season, this becomes a go-to. The Branson Family was so easy going and so much fun to work with. I was pre-warned that one of the boys HATED having his photos taken. I do my best to combat this challenge by keeping things light and and not taking anything too seriously. My biggest goal is that my families have fun and truly enjoy their experience with me.

What to Wear for a Winter Family Session
I offer complimentary styling assistance for all of my sessions. However, I must be honest and say that this family knocked it out of the park all on their own! With the beautiful solid wood doors, red brick and red terra cotta roofing at at Lydie’s Cottage, it just worked! They could not have chosen their colors any better. When you are takin photos in the winter, it’s always good to stick with warmer colors. Also, never be afraid to use layers such as sweaters, light weight scarves and even hats.
Grandma’s Favorite Image From Lydie’s Cottage
With her final images chosen for her package, Carol came back to me and asked, “How much would it be to add on one more? I just LOVED that Maddie Kay wanted me to hold her”! I of course was able to make sure she had this photo! Something to understand when working with small kiddo’s is that you are less likely to get a traditional “sit and smile” shot. You are far more likely to capture the perfect quirks of who they truly are. And for me, that’s the best part!
Recreating a Family Memory
At the end of our session, we had a chance to recreate a family photo from years past in front of the pond. To my knowledge the last one was prior to the granddaughters’ arrival’s so I am sure it will be a special addition to their photo collection. I very much look forward to working with this wonderful family again!
